Ex-Blackburn star Emerton: Australian football in a great position

Brett Emerton is convinced the current situation surrounding the Australian national team is the best it has been for some time.

The Socceroos are currently on a run of seven wins in their past eight games including three from three in World Cup qualifying and the depth of the playing group has played a major role in that streak.

Sydney FC ace Emerton says Holger Osieck's squad is in very good shape and is supremely confident of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with games to spare.

"It's the best it's been for a long, long time, and we're going to need each and every player in the squad over the coming years," said Emerton.

"Obviously there's a lot of games so we'll pick up injuries along the way, but we've shown that the players who have stepped in are up to the task and I feel very comfortable that we'll get the job done and qualify for the next World Cup."

As for the 3-0 win over Oman in Sydney on Tuesday night, Emerton, who missed along with Tim Cahill, Mark Schwarzer and Harry Kewell, said the performance was very impressive.

"I thought the boys had another well drilled, professional performance and a very comfortable win," he added.

"I think we showed by the strength and depth we had a number of players missing, but the boys who stepped in did exceptional and things are looking good for the future."
