Ex-Barcelona, Zaragoza midfielder Songo'o surprised at Portland Timbers snub

Franck Songo'o admits his departure from Portland Timbers has been a massive surprise.

The 25-year old Cameroonian midfielder has been told by new Timbers head coach Caleb Porter he is not a required player for the 2013 season - a decision which he believes has come as somewhat of a bombshell.

"Obviously, I was surprised. I thought I was a Portland Timbers player," the former Barcelona, Crystal Palace and Real Zaragoza winger told The Oregonian.

"We talked on the phone and we talked face to face," Songo'o added. "I signed a two-year contract with them and I thought I was going to stay. But it wasn't up to me."

He now finds himself training with Houston Dynamo with the view of winning a contract with the MLS runners-up and hopes to really pick up his fitness in a bid to impress the coaching staff.

"I was off for three months. I started to play games as soon as I got here," Songo'o said after the Dynamo's 2-1 pre-season loss to Vancouver on Saturday.

"I'm slowly getting there - I'm not half of where I should be. I'm beginning to catch up with the guys."
