Ex-Barcelona star Marquez turned down offers to stay with NYRB
Former Barcelona ace Rafael Marquez has revealed that he turned down a number of offers over the winter in order to remain with New York Red Bulls.
The 32-year old Mexico international joined New York in August 2010 but was being linked with a move away following the 2011 campaign.
However, Marquez has decided to stay with the Red Bulls and now hopes to guide them to the MLS Cup in 2012.
“I’m the one that said no to those because I have a commitment here and I want to succeed. I want to perform at the level that I’m capable of performing.’’“There were offers from different clubs, not only America but in Brazil, but also from Europe,’’ Marquez told the NY Post.
And Marquez added that he feels he has to work so much harder to keep up with the physicality of the North American competition.
“It’s definitely a more physical league than technical, so it’s harder to maintain yourself at that level all the time. The proof of that is the team looked better working at the higher rate towards the end of the season.’’“You need to work here, perhaps harder – or double – than you would have to work in Europe,’’ he added.
