Ex-Arsenal, Man Utd star van Persie wins gong, donates to charity

Robin van Persie's stunning volley for Manchester United against Aston Villa back in 2013 has been voted as the best goal of the Premier League era.

A host of legends of the English game gathered at London in a ceremony to celebrate 25 seasons of Premier League football on Wednesday night.

Former Arsenal and United star van Persie was one of the legends present for the event and the Dutchman was recognised on the night for scoring the best goal of the Premier League era for his wonderful volley against Villa at Old Trafford which helped clinch United's 20th title in 2013.

Speaking after picking up the award, Fenerbahce forward van Persie said: "It's almost impossible to pick a winner. All of them are amazing. In my opinion it's very difficult to pick one.

"I chose that goal because it was the first title I won and it was a huge moment for Manchester United. On a goal like that you don't really think about it.

"You just want to make the most of it and see what happens. But you need a bit of luck as well. What I like about that goal is the whole story that was behind it."

The Dutchman then generously donated an incredible £20,000 to the charity Nordoff Robins, in what was a remarkable gesture of goodwill.
