Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown says Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck did not let anyone down in defeat to Real Madrid.

Keown wrote in the Daily Mail: "Danny Welbeck has long been a player full of promise and potential. His England performances have been impressive.

"But you often wondered how he fitted into Sir Alex Ferguson's team.

"But being selected for the first leg in the Bernabeu and then scoring there seems to have given him increased confidence.

"On Wednesday night, he was asked to support Robin van Persie and help mark Xabi Alonso and he did both admirably."
