England hero Sol Campbell hopes new coach Roy Hodgson makes players earn their caps.

The former Arsenal and Tottenham defender thinks it has become too easy to get a call-up in recent years and results have suffered.

"It's good we've got St George's Park at Burton to develop young talent but it has to be harder to get into the England team.

"It's far too easy to get into the England side right now compared to five, 10 or 15 years ago.

"Someone can play 10 or 15 games and get picked but they are just not ready either physically or mentally.

"And when they do get in there they don't appreciate it either because they haven't had to work hard to get there.

"You can see from the number of caps from the last four years that players are just coming in and out.

"So I'll put my head on the block and say you should have to play really well, really top-quality football not just for 10 or 15 games but over the whole of a season maybe even two before you are considered.

"They have to be more mature, they have to understand it so when they do get it they'll feel like they don't want to lose it and they'll fight to stay in there."
