Ex-Aberdeen, Twente and Scotland striker Booth: Sunderland's Fletcher had to be recalled

Former Scotland striker Scott Booth feels manager Craig Levein had no other choice but to recall Steven Fletcher.

The Sunderland ace is now back in the Scotland fold around 18 months after notifying Levein via text that he no longer wanted to be considered for national team selection and former Aberdeen and FC Twente attacker Booth suggests it is a good move for the World Cup qualifying campaign.

"For me, you should always put the players in form into squads and into games and if you do that then you can't go far wrong," Booth told the Daily Record.

"Fletcher has done really well. I remember when he was at Hibs I thought he was a great player but you always wondered if he could do it down south.

"Well he has proved anyone that thought he couldn't wrong and I am always delighted when I see someone do that.

"That's why my philosophy now is that if you are in form then whoever it is you make sure you get them involved with the national team.

"We have to do whatever we can to get to the World Cup."
