Everton are closing a deal for Barnsley defender Mason Holgate.

The Daily Mail says the defender underwent his medical on Wednesday.

The Goodison Park club look to have beaten Bournemouth to the highly-rated youngster who is tipped to follow in the footsteps of another Barnsley academy graduate John Stones.

Stones also joined Everton from the Yorkshire club, and at the time had made just one more league start for Barnsley than teenager Holgate has now.

The 18-year-old was due to hold talks with Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe on Wednesday, but Everton have now bettered Bournemouth's £1m offer with a further £1m due in add-ons.
