Barnsley winger Adam Hammill can be snapped up for a cut-price £500,000 this month.
The People says Nottingham Forest have met the buyout clause in Hammill's deal.
But Forest face competition for the midfielder from clubs in the Premier League, including Everton and West Bromwich Albion.
Hammill may favour Everton, having come through the system at rivals Liverpool as a junior.
