Everton to trump Sunderland for Wigan's Baines

Everton have made a late bid to hijack Sunderland's deal for Wigan Athletic left-back Leighton Baines.

The Mirror says Blues boss Dave Moyes made an official offer from the Goodison club's American training base for the England Under- 21 star and is trying to get him for £4.5million in installments.

That valuation is way below the £6m fee that Sunderland have agreed. But Moyes thinks he can step in and win the race because the player is an Everton fan.

Baines was released by Everton as a kid because he was too small but still goes to see them when he can and would love the move as he would not have to uproot his young family.
