Everton surprised Man Utd never tried for Rodwell

Everton were surprised Manchester United didn't try again for Jack Rodwell this summer.

The Daily Star Sunday says there is surprise within Goodison Park that England Under-21s midfielder Rodwell wasn't snapped up, as the Toffees were in talks to sell him to Manchester United just a year ago.

Everton claim they turned down almost £20m from United last summer.

And even though the asking price dropped in the last transfer window to £15m, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson did not return with a new bid.

Everton also expected Arsenal to increase their £12m offer for England central defender Phil Jagielka - but they didn't.

That was a relief for Goodison boss David Moyes, who didn't want to lose Jagielka.
