Everton boss Roberto Martinez wants to assess Arouna Kone's fitness before deciding on whether to sign a new striker.
Kone, 30, managed just six appearances without a goal last season after a knee injury ended his campaign early.
Martinez said: "It is impossible to tell on Kone's return.
"It is a situation we are measuring week by week. Last week he trained twice with the team and then he trained individually.
"He is not far away but it is one of those injuries that you need to be careful and not risk a setback. He is recovering very, very well."
