Everton in shootout with Wolfsburg for Chelsea striker Lukaku

Everton are in a straight shootout with Wolfsburg for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku.

The People says Chelsea have told the Belgium international he can leave the club, with Didier Drogba due to return to Stamford Bridge.

And Everton are in pole position to sign Lukaku after his successful loan spell at Goodison Park last term.

Lukaku, 21, had been holding out for Champions League football, but interest from Atletico Madrid and Juventus has faded after the player endured a poor World Cup - an eventuality which could play into Everton's hands.

Wolfsburg, who will return to Europe's elite club event, are believed to be the only side willing to rival Everton.

The Toffees are prepared to go close to Chelsea's £25million asking price and are pinning their hopes on completing a deal, as Roberto Martinez's striking resources are thin.
