Everton's Rodwell remaining grounded despite England debut

Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell is under no illusions that he will have difficulty regaining his place in the England team once the more experienced members of the squad return from injury. He said: "It was a perfect night all round. It's a proud moment for me. As a kid, I always dreamed of making my senior debut. So it's a dream come true."

Rodwell admitted his nervousness after being told he was coming on by manager Fabio Capello.

"But I was focused from the start," he added.

"I thought to myself, 'You might get the chance to go on, so keep focused'.

"When I was sat on the bench, I pictured where I'd be playing and I was ready to come on."

It was a real baptism of fire for Rodwell as England defeated World Champions Spain 1-0 at Wembley.

Asked what he had taken from the game, Rodwell said: "Loads. Confidence, the experience of being able to play against the likes of Iniesta and Xavi and all the big players like that.

"It's just a great experience for me and I just want to keep focused now and keep playing well and playing regularly for my club."

He added: "Your first game in anything - the reserves, your first team and your club, the (England) Under-21s and now the seniors - everything is just a learning curve and it's good experience for me. Long may it continue."

"There's a big squad here and a lot of lads itching to play, so whatever happens happens," added Rodwell, who is competing with Wayne Rooney, Jack Wilshere and Steven Gerrard once they return from injury.

"When they come back, hopefully we can do even better.

"I can't look too far ahead. I'm really pleased and I've just got to concentrate on my club form now."
