Everton's Heitinga can't understand Ferdinand omission

Everton defender John Heitinga has indicated that he cannot understand why Rio Ferdinand is not in the England team.

The Manchester United centre-back was left out of Roy Hodgson's initial 23-man squad for Euro2012 and has not been included even after Gary Cahill was ruled out of the tournament with a fractured jaw.

That decision is one that has Holland's Heitinga stunned although he is confident his Toffees teammate Phil Jagielka can do well alongside John Terry in central defence.

"Yes, I'm quite surprised," Heitinga said.

"But then, on the other hand, Phil Jagielka, my partner in the defence for Everton, is doing very well.

"There are no more centre-halves in the England squad but it's up to those who are there to perform.

"I was quite surprised in the beginning that they're going this way and hopefully they're going to play a good tournament.

"(Joleon) Lescott is there as well so they've still got a few good centre-halves."
