Everton boss David Moyes is ready to snap up off contract Olympiakos defender Olof Mellberg.

The Liverpool Echo says the former Aston Villa defender would be available on a free transfer, having failed to agree an extension to his current contract, and would add central defensive cover to Moyes' ranks - an area in which the Blues were caught short at times last season.

At 34, Mellberg would represent another short-term solution, though his performances for Sweden at Euro 2012 show he still has plenty to offer.

His Premier League experience, garnered during seven years with Aston Villa between 2001 and 2008, would also prove valuable.
