Everton boss David Moyes is chasing Chelsea striker Danny Sturridge.
The Mirror says Moyes asked to borrow the England Under-21 striker after being impressed by his form in a loan spell with Bolton last season - which featured a stunning goal against his Toffees.
The Scot - still without a proven signing in this transfer window - has tried twice to persuade Chelsea to let Sturridge go out on loan again, but so far new Stamford Bridge manager Andre Villas-Boas has said no.
Bolton Wanderers have also been rejected in their attempts to borrow the 21-year-old again, and Everton's chances of changing Villas-Boas' mind seem slim - in this window at least.
