Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye has been released from the Senegal squad.

The Liverpool Echo says Gueye's surprising Senegal call-up has been cut short as the midfielder has returned to USM Finch Farm to recover from his injury.

The midfielder has missed Everton's last two fixtures against Rotherham and Huddersfield with a strained knee, but was still asked to join up with his national team squad this week.

That caused some surprise among Blues supporters, who are hoping to see the energetic midfielder back in Marco Silva's first team as soon as possible.

It is understood Senegal wanted to check the player's fitness with their own medical staff before making a decision on whether he should stay with the squad.
