Everton great Cahill: NYRB appointing Petke was a no-brainer

Tim Cahill suggests the appointment of Mike Petke as New York Red Bull head coach was a great choice.

The 37-year old former defender permanently took the reins from Hans Backe last month and midfielder Cahill feels someone with such an insight into the club will prove to be a success at coaching level regardless of his inexperience.

"For me, it's probably what the team needs, a boss that knows a lot about the team, the infrastructure from bottom to the top," said Cahill.

"This summer I kept hearing names of European coaches. When asked what I thought about Mike Petke, I was over the moon straightaway. It was a no-brainer.

"It's hard bringing in European coaches who don't understand the league. To have the backup of (assistant) Robin Fraser too, it's tremendous, two defensive coaches. That was our biggest problem last year.

"It doesn't take rocket scientist to see what happened last season. The team was really open, messy, there was no stability; whereas now there is stability. There's Petke, there's his way of playing.

"There's a vision of what's going to happen in the coming years, what we're going to build to."
