James McCarthy is not in Everton's good books after aggravating an injury while on Republic of Ireland duty.
The 26-year-old midfielder reported for international duty against the wishes of the Toffees who wanted him to remain at home and prepare for the weekend's Merseyside derby with Liverpool.
But McCarthy struggled with his hamstring problem in training and withdrew from Friday's World Cup qualifier against Wales.
It is understood that Everton's medical department felt McCarthy could have been fit for Saturday's short trip to Anfield if he had remained with the club, but they are furious he travelled to Ireland and is subsequently unavailable.
