Everton friendly goal put me on the map - Philadelphia Union's Hernandez

Philadelphia Union young gun Cristhian Hernandez admits his goal against Premier League club Everton last season helped increase his profile in the USA.

The 18-year old homegrown signing netted the only goal against the Toffees in a friendly last summer and on the eve of the Union's first MLS match of 2012, says that strike allowed him to win a professional contract with the club after starring in the youth academy.

"There was no way I was going anywhere else," Hernandez said. "Philadelphia was my choice.

"That (goal) kind of just blew everything up. Being named the academy player of the year and then coming to PPL and scoring against Everton put my name on the map, at least here in the US.

"It helped me a lot to have a bigger name. It also put a weight on my shoulders but that's what soccer is all about."
