Everton forward Rooney says England boss Southgate can't ignore him if he plays well

Wayne Rooney has warned Gareth Southgate that if he plays well at Everton this season, he won't be able to ignore him when he selects his 2018 World Cup squad.

The Three Lions all-time leading goal scorer has been left out of the England manager's previous two training camps.

Southgate hinted towards Rooney's lack of playing time as a cause for his omission, which is a situation that Rooney has looked to rectify by moving to Goodison Park.

Despite his insistence that Everton is his main focus, Rooney has alluded to the fact that his new club can provide a platform to be back in an England jersey.

"To be honest I'm not focused on it, I'm focused on Everton, getting back playing and doing well for Everton," he said.

"If I do that then Gareth Southgate will have a decision to make, whether he puts me back in the squad or not.

"Hopefully, my performances are good enough for Everton and I'm sure he won't be able to ignore me if they are."
