Everton edge Sydney in first clash of Australian tour

Everton started their pre-season campaign by beating A-League champion Sydney FC 1-0 at Sydney's Olympic stadium on Saturday night. Nigerian international striker Victor Anichebe less scored the only goal of the game just after half-time in front of 40,446 spectators.

The Toffees Socceroo midfield star Tim Cahill played the second half, receiving a loud ovation as he entered the field ahead of his team-mates.

Substitute Dimitri Petratos had a late chance for Sydney, but lost control of the ball at the vital moment.

Trinidad's former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke, Sydney's marquee player in its first A-League title winning team, played 62 minutes.
