Holgate says Everton should be ambitious and look at bridging the gap from Europa League to the elite competition inside a season.
“I think we should be aiming for Champions League next season," said the 20-year-old.
“The Europa League would obviously be massive for the club and we feel like we should be playing in Europe and it is definitely something we are aiming for and with a strong end to the season it's something we're hoping we get.
“But for a few draws we could have been talking about top four this season. It's little runs here and there and little things going for you," he said. “That's the difference.
“That's where this season has just dropped a little bit short for us but hopefully next season there will be a difference, especially with being in Europe which will test the squad."
