Jagielka told evertonfc.com: “We knew it was going to be hard but it was a game we were all up for and all ready for. It was nice to have a goal going into the last 20 minutes to give us something to hang on to and we defended really well.
“It was hard with the amount of people they had popping into holes, but fortunately we had enough people in the right places making blocks and tackles and we managed to keep them out.
“We won’t get carried away,” he added. “The game was perfect for us with everyone expecting us to lose like we normally do first game of the season, so it was nice to get three points. We have now got a hard game at Villa where hopefully we can get a point or three.”
