Everton fullback Leighton Baines feels he's now ready to dislodge Chelsea star Ashley Cole from England's starting XI.

Cole, 31, has been virtually unrivalled since making his senior international debut in Albania in 2001 and has won all 98 of his caps as an England starter.

Yet Baines, 27, said: “I’ve been in the squad for a couple of years now and I’m feeling comfortable and a part of things.

“But of course I want to play in more games. That’s only natural. The more you play, the happier you are.

“Ashley Cole has been outstanding for England for a long time and he deserves every one of those 98 caps.

“I’m sure he will get to the milestone of 100 caps and I don’t think there is any way I am going to stop that happening.

“Ashley is a terrific player but, in the games I’ve played, I’ve shown I can come in and do a job as well.

“I’ve no idea what I need to do to get in the team ahead of him on a regular basis. All I can do is play as well as I can for Everton and that’s all I’m really focused on.”
