Everton boss Unsworth offers Keane route back to top form

Everton boss David Unsworth has urged Michael Keane to get back to basics to find his best form.

Unsworth insists £30m Keane is the “right type" to prove his quality despite dealing with a crisis of confidence.

“I think Michael is a top young player. He has all the attributes, he's got the size, he's got great physical presence, he's good in the air, he's been schooled very well so is comfortable on the ball," Unsworth said.

“But he is playing in an under-performing team and we are leaking goals.

“There's that word again – confidence – and is his confidence as high as it would be? Probably not.

“I just think Michael, our back four and everybody needs to return to basics in terms of defending.

“It's ok to put the ball in Row Z and be organised and keep a clean sheet. It's something we've been working on and talking about for weeks – keeping a clean sheet, that clean sheet mentality.

“We need to get back to basics."
