Everton boss Moyes hails Baines form

Everton boss Dave Moyes was full of praise for Leighton Baines after his superb performance in Saturday's defeat by Manchester United.

Moyes said: "Baines had an excellent game, he is looking a really good player and had an excellent game against (Cristiano) Ronaldo.

"Ronaldo did all the step-overs but Leighton just kept his eyes on the ball and took it away. It was good, old fashioned defending and I am delighted with the way he has settled in.

"He wasn't bothered about the swaying and body movements, only the ball. And then after taking it away from the player he was able to get involved in our attacking as well, I was more than pleased with him."

Baines clearly relished his battle with Ronaldo, saying: "Playing against Ronaldo is always going to be tough. It was nice to start positively, get a couple of tackles in and try to get forward. We are quite pleased with the performance, just disappointed with the result.

"The more I play, the more I will get an understanding with the other players around me. With training, you get to know certain aspects but until you are playing regularly with others around you, you can't get to know each other that well. Hopefully, we can soon do that and blossom.

"Whoever we play at home, we are looking to win, so we are disappointed not to win or take anything from a decent performance.

"My link-up with the other defenders will improve and we will get better in the future. Hopefully, as a team, we can do well throughout the season and I can do better as an individual."
