Everton boss Dave Moyes admits he was caught short in the summer transfer market.
Marouane Fellaini was the only player Everton spent a considerable amount on during the transfer window, while Andy Johnson was also sold to Fulham.
Moyes had hoped to significantly strengthen his squad but the funds were not available.
He explained: "My idea was to bring in four or five players, two or three who would have cost big money and gone straight into the team.
"It was into the summer before I realised I wouldn't be able to and it took a few months to bounce back from that."
