Everton boss Martinez expected the worst following Jagielka injury

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has revealed that he feared the worst when Phil Jagielka suffered a serious looking knee injury against Arsenal.

Jagielka was forced off in the second half of Everton's clash against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday due to a knee injury and it was feared at the time that the defender could potentially miss the rest of the season.

Much to the relief of the Everton fans, it has been revealed that Jagielka has been ruled out for around two months.

Martinez said: "We expected the worst after the game, especially in the way the injury happened. The medial ligament is affected. It is quite straightforward and there is no other damage in the knee.

"It is the least that it could be. I wouldn't expect anything longer than eight to nine weeks. Phil has been adapting really well to his England role and there has been a real difference since the World Cup in Brazil. Every time he performs for England now it is like watching him play for Everton.

"It's a good sign for any player when he can perform at international level as he does for his club and it shows maturity."
