Everton boss Roberto Martinez is delighted with Phil Jagielka's new deal.

Jagielka has lengthened his deal by a further year, keeping him tied to the Club until the end of the 2017/18 season.

"Players with leadership qualities like Phil are rare and, undoubtedly, it's something you need to be born with," Martinez told evertonfc.com. “But what's even more impressive for me is how Phil continues to grow and develop in the role.

“Phil carries out the role of Club captain with incredible enthusiasm and integrity. He's a fantastic example to everyone around him."

Martinez also stressed the importance of keeping influential senior figures such as Jagielka at Goodison.

The manager added: “While we are working really hard to add new talent to our squad for next season, we are equally focused on maintaining the core of our squad and the outstanding talent we have in our dressing room.

“I'm sure this news will give everyone a real boost as we start to prepare for the season ahead."
