Everton boss Koeman: Rooney 'still one of the best in his position'

Everton boss Ronald Koeman thinks that Wayne Rooney is still one of the best players in his position.

The 31-year-old mainly played a peripheral role in Jose Mourinho's side last season, and he was allowed to leave for free to his boyhood club on a free transfer this summer.

Following his return to Merseyside, Rooney scored on his debut league game to help his side to a 1-0 win over Stoke on Saturday.

"He shows that he's still one of the best in his position," Koeman said.

"I think he was different class in ball possession - he was comfortable on the ball, he took right, good decisions on the ball and he scored a great goal. And you cannot ask more [than] that."

"You like to have players in the team with a lot of a cleverness on the pitch and that they know, they see and they handle what they need to do at a certain moment. That was his best game so far."
