Everton beaten by Real Betis in Germany

Everton ended their pre-season tour of Germany by losing 4-3 on penalties to Real Betis.

The Toffees, who had lost 2-1 to Dynamo Dresden in their opening match of the tournament on Friday, opened the scoring after just 14 minutes when Tom Cleverley's corner was turned into his own net by Aissa Mandi.

However, Everton's lead lasted less than 10 minutes before Betis centre-back German Pezzella levelled matters after Ronald Koeman's side had failed to properly clear a set play.

As a result, the game went to penalties, with Everton duo Conor Grant and Kieran Dowell seeing their efforts saved, giving Betis substitute Charly Musonda the chance to win it for the La Liga team, which he converted.

"It's still pre-season and we know the league will start in two weeks so we have to be ready for that," assistant manager Erwin Koeman told the club's official Facebook page.
