The European Club Association (ECA) has revealed that its members want the 2022 World Cup to be moved to May.
FIFA's prestigious international competition is set to take place in Qatar in eight years' time with suggestions that the usual months between May and September will provide high risks for the players due to the soaring temperatures in the Middle East.
However, it has come to the fore that the ECA - in conjunction with the European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL) - believe the tournament can be safely played in May and June rather than being moved to either January/February or November/December in 2022.
"The May option is the best alternative to the traditional June-July timing, since it retains the logical calendar order and avoids compressing such an important competition as the World Cup in the middle of the traditional and busy club football season (winter season)," read part of a proposal from the ECA and EPFL.
"As such, simply avoiding this concentration makes the May option by far less intrusive compared to all winter proposals."
The proposal added that the ECA and EPFL want group stage matches to be played from May 5 to 19, 2022 between 6pm and 11pm local time. Knockout matches, beginning on May 21, would kick off at 7pm or 10pm local time.
