Southampton endured a frustrating night in the Europa League on Thursday.
Claude Puel's Saints required a win or a scoreless draw at home against Hapoel Be'er Sheva but it did not go according to plan as they drew 1-1 at St Mary's.
The south coast club put in a disjointed and tepid performance when they needed to shine on the European stage, and it cost them dearly, as they were unable to create history by advancing to the knockout stages of a European competition for the first time.
The most disappointing moment came in the 78th minute when midfielder Oriol Romeu gave the ball away cheaply, inviting Maor Buzaglo to fire a lovely strike across Fraser Forster and into the bottom right corner to give the Israeli minnows the lead.
It took the concession of a goal to kick Southampton into gear and they managed to equalise in the first minute of injury-time through Virgil van Dijk who finished from 10 yards in scrambled fashion.
His central defensive partner Maya Yoshida had the chance to give the Saints a stirring comeback but put his header wide of the mark.
The draw had Southampton and Hapoel finish level on eight points in Group K but the visitors progress to the Round of 32 by virtue of the fourth tie breaker which is the highest number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question.
The result was further compounded for the Saints by the shoulder injury to striker Charlie Austin who had to leave the pitch in the first half.
Puel's side will now look to rally themselves for Sunday's home Premier League clash with Middlesbrough.
