EUROPA LEAGUE - Round of 32: Dnipro ace Konoplyanka nets penalty to sink Tottenham

FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk have beaten Tottenham 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 32 clash at the Dnipro Arena.

The Ukrainian club required a late penalty from Yevhen Konoplyanka, who was close to joining Liverpool in the winter, as they drew first blood in Europe's second tier club competition.

Former Spurs manager Juande Ramos was at the helm of the Dnipro side who saw visiting striker Roberto Soldado inexcusably miss a side-footed effort for Tim Sherwood's charges from close range ten minutes into the second half.

The Dnipro crowd were inspired by the unnecessary political violence and bloodshed that has been taking place in the capital of Kiev, singing the Ukrainian national anthem before kick-off, before rallying their side to a last-gasp triumph.

The winning goal came when Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen brought down Dnipro's Brazilian striker Matheus in the area which allowed Konoplyanka to step up to the spot to take on Brad Friedel.

The Ukraine international fired his spot-kick in off the upright in the 81st minute which was enough to give the home side a narrow advantage heading into the return bout at White Hart Lane next Thursday night.
