EUROPA LEAGUE Ro16 2nd LEG: Chelsea see off Steaua with Torres on target

Chelsea have moved through to the Europa League quarter-finals thanks to a Round of 16 second leg win over Steaua Bucharest.

The reigning European champions won 3-1 at Stamford Bridge tonight to edge the Romanians 3-2 on aggregate after their 1-0 defeat in Bucharest last week.

Juan Mata had Chelsea back on level terms ten minutes before the break when his scuffed shot bounced off Steaua keeper Ciprian Tatarusanu and trickled over the line.

Chelsea soon found themselves trailing again when Vlad Chiriches fired home from close range after Petr Cech had kept out Cristian Tanase’s effort on the stroke of half-time.

Rafael Benitez’s men needed a lift in the second half and it came when skipper John Terry, who has reportedly had differences with the Spaniard recently, met Eden Hazard’s free-kick to fire home a powerful header just before the hour-mark.

A little over ten minutes later and Chelsea were 3-1 ahead on the night and 3-2 on aggregate thanks to Fernando Torres who produced a neat first touch from Hazard’s pass before slotting expertly past Tatarusanu. The Spaniard could have bagged himself a brace, and finished off the tie for Chelsea, but smashed his penalty into the post after Hazard had been brought down by Alexandru Bourceanu.

Nevertheless, the required job got done as Chelsea move through to the final eight of Europe’s second tier club competition where they will join the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle, Lazio and Benfica.
