EUROPA LEAGUE: Liverpool denied at home by Swiss visitors Sion

Swiss side FC Sion held Liverpool to a surprise draw 1-1 draw at Anfield in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Liverpool got off to the perfect start in the 4th minute when Divock Origi's pull-back pass was met by Adam Lallana whose controlled finish was enough to beat Andrejs Vanins.

But the team from Switzerland fought back with a surprising equaliser as Ebenezer Assifuah used his electric pace and composure to strike beyond the onrushing Simon Mignolet with 18 minutes on the clock.

Danny Ings then had a goal adjudged to be offside after Nathaniel Clyne's cross found the ex-Burnley forward.

Brendan Rodgers' side had the majority of possession thereafter, but were unable to kill off the contest by scoring a second goal before the half-time whistle blew at 1-1.

Both Origi and Ings had efforts on goal in the second half, but they could not breakdown the visitors resilience in defence.

Liverpool threatened a late show with chances from Emre Can and Alberto Moreno but Sion held on to only increase the mounting pressure on Rodgers.

The result has the Reds sitting second on Group B with two draws from two matches with Sion above them on four points. In the other group fixture, Bordeaux held Rubin Kazan to a 0-0 draw in Russia.
