Wigan Athletic have been beaten in their final group stage of the Europa League 2-1 by NK Maribor in Slovenia.
The Latics, under the guidance of new boss Uwe Rosler, required a victory at Ljudski vrt to finish second in Group D but could not get the result they needed as their losing streak in all competitions extended to six.
Wigan actually opened the scoring in the 41st minute when Jordi Gomez converted from the spot after Nick Powell had won a penalty.
Maribor were able to reply two minutes later when they were awarded a questionable penalty for handball which caused Chris McCann to receive a second yellow card, reducing them to ten men. Dejan Mezga's spot kick was turned onto the post by Scott Carson but the midfielder was able to slot home the rebound.
Maribor then pushed ahead prior to the hour-mark when Zeljko Filipovic fired home into the top corner which was the eventual winner, despite Ales Mertelj being sent off for a second yellow in the 74th minute, giving the Slovenian club their first victory over an English side.
The triumph also lifted them off the bottom of the group and into the Round of 32 after group winners Rubin Kazan had accounted for Zulte-Waregem 2-0 in Belgium.
For Wigan - and Rosler, who only took the job on the weekend - it will be back to the drawing board as they look to arrest a four-game losing streak in the Championship when they host Bolton on Sunday.
