EUROPA LEAGUE: Fulham held by Twente

Fulham were tonight held to a 1-1 draw in the Europa League by Dutch club FC Twente.

The Cottagers took the lead thanks to Andy Johnson's 19th minute finish which came about when he intercepted Twente defender Dwight Tiendalli's poor squared pass in the back third.

Fulham continued to attack the Twente goal at Craven Cottage but were unable to pierce the opposing defence but they only had themselves to blame for the inefficiency in front of goal.

The Dutch club found themselves on level terms four minutes before half-time when Luuk de Jong's powerful header hit the post before falling into the back of the net as it took a deflection off Cottagers goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

Although the Australian had no idea of it, the goal will go down as a keeping error and put down on the scoresheet as an own goal.

Clint Dempsey came close twice early in the second half and Steve Sidwell put his header over the crossbar with about 20 minutes remaining but the home side couldn't find a winner as they had to settle for a point in their opening Group K outing.
