Jermain Defoe has sent a reminder to Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas that he is still very much a required player at the club.
The 30-year old striker, who has come off the bench three times in the Premier League so far this season, netted a double as Spurs kicked of their 2013/14 UEFA Europa League with a 3-0 home win over Norwegian sidew Tromso IL in Group K.
Defoe gave the north Londoners the lead in the 21st minute when he lifted the ball over Tromso keeper Marcus Sahlman after some exciting lead-up play from Lewis Holtby and Erik Lamela.
The England international quickly added a second when he slotted through the legs of defender Jaroslaw Fojut and Sahlman after he had been found by Holtby.
Christian Eriksen, who was ever so impressive on debut against Norwich City on the weekend, then made it 3-0 with his first Spurs goal four minutes from time, producing a dipping effort from the edge of the area.
It was a solid performance from Villas-Boas' side but there were some casualties with Mousa Dembele, Danny Rose and Younes Kaboul all succumbing to injuries although the latter had to remain on the pitch after all three subs had been used.
