Euro2016: Only doubt is England could not score - Stuart Pearce

Former England international Stuart Pearce is confident of the team's chances in the last 16 at Euro2016 despite their struggles to score goals in the group stage.

The Three Lions finished as runners-up in Group B and will now face the second-placed side in Group F in the first knockout stage, which could be Portugal, Hungary, Austria or Iceland.

Former England boss Pearce feels the performances of Roy Hodgson's side have been good enough to warrant confidence heading into the Round of 16, if of course they can fix their goalscoring problems.

"I would say very little went wrong, the only doubt on the performance is the fact that we couldn't put the ball in the back of the net," Pearce told Express Sport.

"We had a lot of efforts at goal but we played against a team that had no aspiration to come out and attack us and they kept numbers behind the ball all the time.

"When we did out skirmishes around the goal, Slovakia put some real good blocks in and the ball just didn't fall to us - on another day it could have been 3-0.

"You just have to take that on the chin and look at the positives from the game - the squad situation is nice and healthy, the clean sheet and no injuries.

"The only downside in the campaign at present is that we've not won the group and the implications from that might be a tougher route in."

"We've played these teams in our group and won every game against teams that are of the standard of Slovakia, Hungary and Iceland so that wouldn't worry me.

"It's probably just beyond the last 16 where there could be problems."
