Euro2016: Northern Ireland own goal sends Wales through to Quarter Finals

A Gareth McAuley own goal was enough for Wales to beat Northern Ireland as they progressed into the Euro 2016 Quarter-finals with a 1-0 win.

Stuart Dallas had a crisp drive saved by Welsh goalie Wayne Hennessy early on.

Then an in-swinging ball into the box from Gareth Bale found Aaron Ramsey who nearly connected with a flick.

The Arsenal star had a goal disallowed two minutes later after connecting with a Sam Vokes header.

But his team-mate Chris Gunter had to make a decisive defensive header after a dangerous cross almost found Dallas at the back post.

Northern Ireland started the second half with intent but Wales should have scored when a Beckhamesque delivery from Ramsey found Sam Vokes who could only divert his header wide.

Bale then had a trademark free-kick saved by Michael McGovern as the all-British tie came to life.

He made the difference with 15 minutes left after a delicious low cross forced Gareth McAuley to divert into his own net.

Round of 16

Wales: 1 (McAuley 75 og)

Northern Ireland: 0 Parc des Princes, Paris
