Euro2016: England, Man City winger Sterling shocked by online abuse

Roy Hodgson is concerned about Raheem Sterling after he was the subject of abuse from internet trolls.

According to the Daily Star, the Manchester City winger was slammed for his subpar performances in England's opening two Euro2016 matches and has reacted negatively to the abuse directed his way online.

Sterling is an avid user of social media and has reportedly been shocked by the level of criticism that has been fired his way.

It is understood that Hodgson is worried about the state of mind of the 21-year-old and fears his confidence is at an all-time low, especially after he was an unused sub in the 0-0 draw with Slovakia earlier in the week.

England assistant Ray Lewington admitted that such intense online abuse is something certainly not warranted by the England players.

"It's not nice to see people like (Sterling) being booed, it does hurt," he said.

"People think they earn loads of money and have no feelings - it's completely wrong.

"They are human beings, they feel things, particularly when they are young and trying to find their feet and it wasn't nice."

It remains to be seen if Hodgson will select Sterling for England's Round of 16 clash with Iceland in Nice on Monday.
