EURO2016: Dominant England held by battling Slovakia

England failed to turn their possession into goals but the point gained in a scoreless draw with Slovakia was enough to take them through to the last 16 in second place in the group.

England boss Roy Hodgson made six changes to the side including leaving Wayne Rooney on the substitute's bench, but the first 45 minutes it was business as usual for the Three Lions who overwhelmed the Slovakian team but failed to open the scoring.

Slovakia were forced to defend for long periods, sometimes desperately, but a mixture of poor England finishing, good keeper saves and blocks from defenders all denied Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge and Adan Lallana.

Jamie Vardy had the best chance when his pace took him clear of Martin Skrtel but his shot was well stopped by keeper Matus Kozacik. Nathaniel Clyne was causing all sorts of problems for the Slovakian rearguard down the right hand side but despite his, and England's best endeavours, the score line remained blank at the break.

Vladimir Weiss gets the ball on the left and cuts inside, he scored like that against Russia and he has a shot saved by Joe Hart!

The second half was much the same except that in the opening moments Slovakia suddenly fashioned a couple of chances of their own. Joe Hart and Chris Smalling had breakdown in communication and almost let the opposition through for a soft goal.

Normal service was quickly resumed as Clyne forced Kozacik into a save but Vladimir Weiss then forced Hart into a stop.

England's best chance arrived for substitute Dele Alli who, with almost his first touch, met Henderson's cross but Skrtel cleared off the line. Rooney came on for Jack Wilshere and had two efforts blocked.

With time running out the question was would the game see yet another late goal as has been a feature of this tournament, but Slovakia, who have never kept a clean sheet in six previous games at a major tournament, managed to hold out for a battling point.
