Euro2016: Aerial presence of West Ham forward Carroll could benefit England – Cascarino

Tony Cascarino has stated that the presence of Andy Carroll would have helped England overcome Slovakia at Euro2016.

England laboured to a 0-0 draw against Slovakia in their final Group B game and despite their best efforts, the Three Lions were simply unable to find the back of the net.

Former Irish international Tony Cascarino was following England's game very closely and has stated his belief that the presence of a target man such as West Ham United's Carroll would have been beneficial in helping England claim victory in Saint-Etienne, and subsequently top spot in their group.

Cascarino wrote in The Times: "While England's intricate passing and movement was outstanding I was struck last night how they offer such a small aerial threat… In open play it seemed very unlikely that England would score with a header.

"Sturridge and Vardy are not going to get above a defender too often to win a ball, although there was Harry Kane to come off the bench. Quite a few crosses were floated to the far post, where anyone with an instinct for headers might have positioned themselves, but last night they just drifted out of danger.

"When you are creating chance after chance on the ground it's good to have an aerial option, the kind which Andy Carroll would provide."
