Etherington: I have fond memories of my final Stoke days

Former Stoke City winger Matthew Etherington has spoken of his emotional farewell from the club.

Ahead of Steven Gerarrd's final game for Liverpool at the Britannia Stadium this Sunday, Etherington recalled his final appearance for the Potters last year.

Etherington was a fan favourite during his five years at Stoke and spoke of the fond farewell he received when his days in red and white came to an end.

"Hearing Stoke fans chant my name when I was a late sub in the last home game will live with me forever," he wrote in his column for the Stoke Sentinel.

"Then there was another great reception from travelling fans when I came on in the very last game at West Brom.

"Then in the dressing room a couple of the players, Glenn Whelan and Ryan Shawcross, said some very nice things about how great it had been to play alongside me."

Etherington also said Stoke fans are likely to give Liverpool legend Gerarrd a warm reception in his final Premier League game for the club.

"I know the home fans are loyal first and foremost to Stoke City, but I'm sure they will find it in them to show their support for Gerrard," he added.
