Michael Essien is determined to establish himself as a first-choice in Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari's midfield.

Essien, 25, who is ready to sign a new five-year deal worth £80,000 a week, said: "When the competition gets keener it brings out the best in all the players.

"Last season we signed new players and people thought I could lose my place.

"But I fought and stayed to maintain my position."
