Espanyol name Mane as new coach

Espanyol have quickly moved to replace sacked coach Tintin Marquez.

Jose Manuel Esnal, also known as Mane, has been named in charge of Espanyol.

The former Real Mallorca and Levante coach has been given a contract to the end of the season.

"Jose Manuel Esnal - Mane - will be the new Espanyol coach until the end of the season, after the agreement reached with the Basque coach to take charge following the dismissal of Bartolome Marquez, announced yesterday," read a statement on their official website.

"Mane is a coach with extensive and contrasting professional experience during which he coached in the Primera Liga, among others, UE Lleida, RCD Mallorca, CD Alaves and Athletic Bilbao, as well as achieving promotion with other clubs like Levante.

"Mane will join the first team's training sessions on Wednesday and afterwards will be presented as the new coach."

The 58-year-old's best achievements were at Alaves, where he achieved promotion to the Primera Liga and steered the team to the UEFA Cup final two years later where they narrowly lost 5-4 to Liverpool in extra time.

Espanyol are currently a point above the relegation zone following four defeats on the trot.
