Former England coach Sven Goran Eriksson has revealed Sir Alex Ferguson tried to stop Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney from playing in the 2006 World Cup.
In his new autobiography, Eriksson alleges that Ferguson promised to 'make my life very difficult' if he picked Rooney for the tournament in Germany after the Manchester United striker had broken his metatarsal against Chelsea.
Serialised in the Mail on Sunday, Eriksson wrote in 'Sven: My Story': "Rooney and his agent knew what Alex was doing.
"His agent (Paul Stretford) called me to say 'Sven, you must get him to the World Cup'. Alex always wanted to defend his players. I understand that. But I had to fight for the England team. We had some good confrontations."
